Begin by taking a survey of the space you intend to clean. Pick up any loose objects from the floor – toys, pens, socks. Doing this all at once before you begin vacuuming instead of as you go will allow the process to go smoother. Also clear out any small pieces of furniture that you need to vacuum underneath, such as desk chairs, trash cans, and magazine racks. You should also collect and throw away any objects that are too large for a vacuum to handle. These include things like, large wrappers, pieces of paper, or food.

Next check your vacuum bag. If it is full you will need to change it to prevent making a mess bigger than the one you are trying to clean. Vacuuming with a full bag will only create excessive dust. If your vacuum has additional filtering features in addition to the bag, check them as well and clean them regularly.
